Continuing on Hyderabadi Zubaan.
Another word used in a unique manner in Hyderabad is the word 'Parson' परसों which otherwise means day-before-yesterday. One of our Hyderabad friends told once 'Hum aapke ghar parson aaye the, aap ghar pe nahin the'.........I retorted, 'Arre Bhai, parson to pure din ghar pe the'.....after much to-ing and fro-ing it emerged he had come a year back. 'Parson' in Hyderabadi lingo can be any time in the past !!
Once I asked a friend, 'Aapke father kya karte hain?'......he replied 'Mere Abba ho gaye'......this had me stumped. 'Ho Gaye, matlab, kya ho gaya unko?'............he replied with much sadness 'Mere Abba Allah ko pyaare ho gaye'.....so don't take 'ho gaye' too lightly, that means someone died.....
Then they have these words - a guava is called 'jaam', banana is called 'mouz' and so on....
We also have this phenomenon of 'aan' ie आँ getting added to everything, even English words.....'Kya Secretaan Bataan karte, Mian'......'Idhar Muncipalty wale rodaan dalte'.........'Ye ministeraan sab choraan hain'......'Angrezaan'
A real incident -
One gentlemen had a old Fiat car in Hyderabad, he would not change his car even when it was showing all signs of wear & tear. He used to go every year to the same car mechanic in Old City to get his tyres retreaded (that means when the tread wears off, instead of buying new tyres, you have another layer of rubber pasted on the tire). This mechanic got fed of trying to salvage this antique every year, he retorted 'Sahab aapke tairaan ghis ghis ke paani ho gaye.......machcharaan kaat-te pancharaan ho jaate' ....to the acute embarrassment of Fiat owner !!
Another unmistakable feature is the extra emphasis on 'khh'. Aqeela becomes Akhila, Waqar becomes Wakhaar, Qeema becomes Kheema......you can go on.....
To enjoy the Hyderabadi zubaan and the way of life, the movie 'Angrez' is a must watch. It also shows the contrast between the Old City and the Rest of Hyderabad in a very funny manner. One memorable is dialogue from this movie is when the self-styled strongman of Old City Ismail Bhai, goes to a local wedding throwing his weight around only to be brought to the ground by a lady who asks 'Ismail Bhai, hum logaan aisa sune ki angrezaan aapko kundal kundal ( कुन्दल कुन्दल ) ke maare'...which means 'you were beaten black and blue' ....ha ha.... it is all too hilarious.....please see the movie.
I am sure anyone who actually belongs to Hyderabad will have many many things to add to this......
