'Dance of Democracy' Begins

Of late I have observed the media describing the 2014 elections in India as the 'Dance of Democracy'......not sure where this term has come from, but sounds pretty catchy.

Today there was polling in Delhi and adjoining areas. My sister who lives in Ghaziabad (which is practically part of Delhi now though technically in UP) had gone to cast her vote today. There are some 'star' candidates from her area. Raj Babbar, the film star, is representing Samajwadi Party (I guess...), Shazia Ilmi, is the high profile Aam Aadmi Party candidate. My sister saw them campaigning in her area.....Raj Babbar telling people 'Bete, mere saath photo leni hai kya?'........let's see how many times they visit after the elections are over !! Narendra Modi had also come recently there for a huge rally which blocked the highway....

So this is the 'dance of democracy' in action. We are proud of Indian Elections. It is a mini-miracle that for the last 10-15 years or so it passes relatively peacefully and mostly everyone is satisfied with the way it is conducted and accepts the results. A lot of the credit for this should go to the EVM (Electronic voting machine). It has put an end to booth capturing and rigging. Though there are still some complaints that the software in the EVM can be hacked.

One can appreciate the conduct of the Indian Election by comparing it to the elections in neighboring Pakistan. After nearly a year of election there, the opposition parties are still asking for recount and generally crying foul that it was rigged.

Confession......the only time I have voted till date is in an election here in UK. Somehow till I was in India I was in so many different locations that I never got to vote......but it is really an excuse.....I should made more effort to register my vote.

The emergence of AAP has made this elections very interesting.

I was watching some TV debates on the Indian Elections recently. Especially debates on the issue of communalism and the 'myth of the Muslim vote' etc. I was quite impressed by Asaduddin Owaisi, the MIM MP from Hyderabad. Having lived in Hyderabad I have known him for a long time (not personally!). There are many prominent Muslims leaders who come in such debates and are generally not able to carry their point, however legitimate. They mostly cut a sorry figure. Not Asaduddin Owaisi. He is a barrister having got his law degree from Lincoln's Inn, London. He is an exceptionally good orator with command over both English and Urdu. He is very well informed and is ready to take on anyone. He is not apologetic about his Indian Muslim identity. He has been branded as a rabble-rouser by the media, but that is not correct. I saw one of the debates which was conducted in Pakistan. He defended India to the hilt and took Pakistan to task for the Mumbai attacks etc.

...............aaj ki mulaqaat bass itni.......
