Time to look beyond Rahul

In less than a day, the results of the elections in India will be out. But the writing is on the wall. NDA is heading towards forming the government and the Congress is staring at their worst performance in history. Already discussions about 'what next?' for Congress has started. Questions about the future of the Dynasty have started.

Looking at the overall situation, one thing is very clear to me - Congress has to look beyond Rahul Gandhi now........

In fact Rahul should take a long hard look at his track record in politics in the last 10 years and conclude what is obvious to most people - he is not cut out for this job. Politics is not for him. There is no shame in admitting that. Just because four of his previous generations were able to run the country and win elections doesn't mean he will also excel at that. He has been thrust into something he is not good at. Period. He has given it 10 years and he is still very mediocre at it.

He maybe hardworking but clearly lacks the connect with people which Priyanka has. He is neither street smart nor media savvy. He has very little grasp of the real issues and the solutions for them. In Indian politics you need to be able to make even your failures and weaknesses look like advantages and he makes even the strengths and good work of the Congress government look like failures. He appears very awkward in his public interactions. He hardly appears natural. And people can see that. It appears as if he is always feeling the strain.

So what is the way forward for Congress? There are many good leaders in the party including young leaders. They have to bring them forward. People like P. Chidambaram, Sachin Pilot, Jyotiraditya Scindia. Priyanka can also play a more active role because the Congress cannot do away with the Dynasty. Maybe The Family can take a background role. Will that happen? Looks very improbable but there doesn't seem to be many options.

The party certainly needs a churn.

Well, Indian politics is strange and it makes a mockery of the most astute observers. I am a very distant observer.

But what appears quite clear is that if they have to bounce back, Rahul cannot be the man at the helm.........
